God is serious when he commands us to not be afraid – some variation of “fear not” is mentioned in the Bible 335 times!
The Bible isn’t saying that we have no reason to be scared. Let’s be real… life can be scary! However, that is not an excuse. Here is an interesting fact: You’ll find “do not be afraid” followed by “do not be discouraged” ten times. How are the two related?
The opposite of discouraged is encouraged – filled with courage! As Christians, the Lord is with us and in us. And He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world.
“Do not be afraid” is powerful instruction – not a suggestion. God doesn’t say “Be afraid or don’t be afraid – I’m good with either.” He firmly commands us. With constantly changing circumstances, God knew we would need to hear it (and read it) over and over again. The only commandment that appears more often is to love God, love others, and do good.
